About me

Welcome to my website! My name is Côme de Préville, and I'm a French photographer specializing in reportage.

My aim is to document what is real, with a focus on everyday human life, both precarious and exceptional: so my portfolio mixes shots of extreme poverty in the Armenian winter with photos of the Vendée Globe skippers finishing their circumnavigations.

I want to bear witness to the snippets of humanity I encounter, in a vibrant and contrasting style.

You can follow me in particular on my Instagram account and contact me by visiting the dedicated page. See you soon!

Artistic style

My photos tend more towards portraiture and live action. In particular, I try to draw inspiration from the masters of humanist photography, with off-centre compositions, motion blur and a search for meaningful gazes.

I like to edit with contrast, clarity and saturated, vibrant colours.

My favourite shots: the 50mm portrait at f/2.2 and the B&W street scene at 35mm f/9!

I work with a Nikon D500 (28-70mm f/2.8, 35mm f/1.8, 50mm f/1.8, 70-200mm f/2.8, and others), a Nikon D7000, and a small, very discreet Fujifilm X30 for street photography.

PERSONAL JOURNEY

I've had a passion for images since childhood (sketching, watercolours, PAO...) and this has led me to set up my own business in 2019, as a designer, graphic artist and illustrator, alongside studying communications.

I discovered photography at secondary school, with my first iPhone. In 2020, during the first lockdown, I was hooked on real photography, thanks to the D70 I had borrowed from my grandfather, my first SLR camera.

My parents' library was always stuffed with works by the masters of humanist photography and photojournalism, and it was no doubt through admiring these pictures that I developed a particular taste for reportage. Here are four of them that made a particular impression on me.

RAYMOND DEPARDON

Humanist photographer, reporter and filmmaker.

His reports make up a large part of the family library, and have nourished my eye from an early age, from French Algeria to the landscapes of Eritrea.

ROBERT CAPA

War photographer and co-founder of Magnum.

I made a personal motto of his famous phrase " if your pictures aren’t good enough, you’re not close enough ». Capa is a legend of photojournalism.

LAURENCE GEAI

A committed photojournalist specialising in conflict zones.

Laurence has the art of capturing the human in the midst of chaos. Her reports, from Ukraine to Syria, demonstrate the importance of bearing witness to the suffering of our times.

Áris Messínis

Head of AFP Greece, war photographer.

I discovered Aris while preparing my first trip to Armenia, with a poignant photo of Armenian civilians fighting in Karabagh.
